Habenaria radiata aka Pecteilis, a tuber type orchid (Corm) which is deciduous after blooming. These tubers are about the size of a pea, and grow like long grass. Don't fear their small size as they are blooming size. These are slow growers and will take many months to grow and flower. All of them we had last year, this size, flowered. We begin selling/shipping these when they are showing growth above the soil. The picture shown is what this size of plant produced for flowers last year. As they mature over the years, they will spread in clumps and produce more flowers. These orchids have very small, grass like growths which are narrow, slender and flimsy looking. Don't let this fool you as these little grass blades will produce nice flowers.

Growing Habenaria radiata (White Egret Flower)

A terrestrial Orchid native to Asia, Habenaria radiata produces exquisite white flowers on flower spikes that are generally 5-9 inches long, occasionally longer. The plants grow from fleshy tubers and produce strap-like, dark green leaves. They are slow to emerge in spring.

Light/Watering: Grow in full sun to partial shade. If there is insufficient rainfall, water to keep plants evenly moist, but not wet.

Fertilizer/Soil and pH: Habenaria grows best in well-drained, slightly acid soil rich in humus. Fertilize lightly with 10-20% of the recommended dosage of an all-purpose plant food once or twice as the flower shoots emerge.

Continuing Care: Mulch during the winter and remove the mulch in spring to allow for the plants to emerge. Where Habenaria is not winter hardy (Cold tolerant to Zone 4, Zone 5+ plants need to be brought indoors for winter), it can be grown in containers and brought indoors to a cold area for dormancy. In warmer climates, grow White Egret Flower in pots and give your plant three months of cold (30-35¡F or below) over the winter before putting back outside (dry soil or plants(corms) will rot and die).

Needs a rest during the winter, with minimal water during rest. Water in early spring for Spring/Summer blooming. Blooming size. Also known as the 'The Holy Spirit' Orchid.

Will not tolerate dry heat above 30 degrees Celsius.
In growth, will not tolerate even a day's worth of dryness.
In winter, must be dry, or bulbs will rot.
After blooming, plant will turn yellow and die back/off. This is natural as the plant must rest.
