Tolumnia Jairak Firm 'Yellow' x William Thurston 'Rainbow', syn. Oncidium Tolumnia, 2" pot, blooming size mini, also known as called Equitant, are small miniature fan shaped orchids from the oncidium family of Tolumnia. Picture shown is not actual but close resembalence. Actual bloom shown in second picture, fading.
Tolumnia are a type of oncidium which does not have a pseudobulb for water storage. These cute little mini orchids are slow to grow, but relatively easy. However, take caution and be sure to water only in the mornings. Since they do not have a pseudobulb to retain water during dry periods, they need water regularly but MUST dry out daily. The tiny little roots will not tolerate being moist at night and will rot and die quickly (literally they can die in a just a few days). For this reason please water them in the mornings only so they will be dry by night. Additionally, these little cuties will continue to re-bloom from a previously bloomed inflorescence (bloom stem). After the blooms begin to die from your bloom stem, don't cut it off. It will most likely send out additional bloom spikes from the upper section of the old bloom spike. For potting medium, we suggest nothing! Anything to impede the roots from drying out quickly will only hinder their growth. In nature these enjoy short amounts of moisture in order to dry quickly. Either mounted, or potted with a large piece of bark. Enjoy these additional blooms for months to come.
